IBC totes are essential tools for storing and transporting liquid products. The inner containers are made of high-molecular-weight, high-density polyethylene (HDPE), which offers excellent corrosion resistance against acids, alkalis, oils, and other liquids. They are suitable for the storage and transport of ordinary liquids as well as Category I, II, and III hazardous liquids, and are widely used in petrochemicals, dyes, intermediates, pesticides, brewing, daily chemicals, and food industries.

Alcohol is classified as a Category III flammable liquid. It has a low flash point, and its vapors can easily form explosive mixtures with air. Exposure to open flames can trigger explosions, and its fire hazard rating is Class A. Therefore, the storage and transportation of alcohol-based substances must strictly comply with national laws, regulations, and industry standards.
Below, Dongfang Container Industry outlines the key precautions for using IBC totes to store and transport alcohol:
Storage Precautions for Alcohol
- Temperature & Environment: The temperature inside the storage warehouse must not exceed 30°C. Ensure the facility is cool, well-ventilated, and protected from direct sunlight.
- Segregation & Fire Safety: Alcohol must be stored separately from oxidizers. The use of equipment or tools prone to generating sparks is strictly prohibited. The warehouse must be equipped with fire-extinguishing equipment suitable for flammable liquid fires and explosions.
- Sealing & Grounding: Ensure the IBC tote is perfectly sealed to prevent alcohol evaporation. IBC totes must be equipped with grounding devices to prevent the accumulation of static electricity.
- Stacking & Spacing: Stacks of IBC totes should not be too large. Adequate distance must be maintained from walls, ceilings, and columns, leaving necessary aisles for fire inspections. Fire and explosion prevention measures must be implemented for all storage tanks.
Transportation Precautions for Alcohol
- Qualification Requirements: According to the Regulations on the Administration of Road Transport of Dangerous Goods and the Road Transport Regulations, the transporter must possess Category III Hazardous Goods Transport Qualifications. Prior filing with local authorities and passing a qualification review are mandatory before transport.
- Pre-Transport Inspection: Before departure, the sealing integrity of the IBC totes must be strictly inspected.
- In-Transit Safety: Dedicated hazardous goods transport vehicles must be used. Standard buffering materials should be placed inside the container or truck bed to secure the load. Avoid bumpy routes whenever possible. Specially assigned personnel should monitor the shipment to watch for IBC tilting or container rupture to prevent leaks that could cause casualties.
